New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark in Brussels

4 October 2007

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark was in Europe this week for high level talks with the leaders of the European Union, NATO, Britain and France, and to attend the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium.

Helen Clark was in Brussels on 3 October and met with European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and other Commissioners at a luncheon.

Following the luncheon, President Barroso said, "New Zealand is very far from Europe geographically but very close in terms of values and vision of international affairs, as well as in terms of economic and cultural ties."

Extracts from the joint press conference are available at: rtsp://rtsppress.cec.eu.int/Archive/video2/mpeg/ref53819/ref53819.rm

Helen Clark also met with the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy High Representative, Javier Solana, signing an agreement on New Zealand's participation in the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan.

Mr Solana's statement is available at: http://www.consilium.europa.eu/ueDocs/cms_Data/docs/pressdata/EN/declarations/96284.pdf
